Group discussion is basically done to arrive at “out of the box” ideas or conclusions on any topic. In the video given, a group of people brainstorm on the topic – influence of modernization on culture. I felt the topic went off track at certain stages but this may happen in group discussions. Coming back mainstream from the subtopics is what made their discussion good. As a group, I felt they were quite organized with their ideas; it didn’t seem unnatural at any stage. But the concluding part could have been better. None of them seemed dominating the discussion but a few weren’t as active as expected. Individually the participants voiced out their opinions boldly and were firm. Proper examples were given at each stage, thereby strengthening their points. They didn’t seem carried away by the discussion nor were they expressing their views rudely. The body-language of a few did impress me. The highlight of the discussion, according to me, was the rhetoric method in which it was conducted.
This made things lively. Everyone was willing to put forward their points. Thereby indicating their enthusiasm towards the discussion. Maybe the topic was of their interest. Unless we have an inclination towards the topic, I don’t think that we could do well. A person or two were clever enough to take initiatives as and when required. It was evident that the participants paid utmost attention, when a co-participant was addressing. If not, they couldn’t have argued or rather discussed that well. But I did feel that they could have motivated those who had a tinge of inhibition initially.
When one participant was targeted by most of the others, she didn’t change the course of her discussion. Rather she stood strong with her points. This was something which I didn’t feel appealing. They shouldn’t have portrayed her as the target. Something which I could takeaway from this discussion, is their constant comparison of the present with the past. Many were able to dig out points due to the above-mentioned fact. Only when the alarm for the final five minutes was given, those who didn’t express themselves till then started speaking. But till the end two or three were evidently inactive. So thereby implying that we must create our own opportunities to express ourselves.
Good observations Srihari. Especially some of the negatives that you have pointed out are lessons for all of us on the don't s in a discussion.

Group discussion, as the name says, it is a discussion done by a group of people about a particular topic to arrive at a conclusion or sometimes a solution.
In the above video, they started of well by expressing their views on the topic given, but then after a point of time they went off the topic discussion some sub topics. But they were able to bring them back on track, which should be appreciated. In a group discussion, one should not be afraid of being criticized. Similarly, in the video, the girl didn't give up her point even when she was defended by almost every other person in the group.
Listening is very important mainly when it comes to group discussion. In the video, everyone listened to each and everyone's viewwhich is always good for a healthy discussion. No one interrupted when one person was talking.
In a group discussion there should be a person to negotiate if an argument arises and also to provide a conclusion of the discussion. In this video, the conclusion was given in a proper way, but it was not elaborate because they discussed many sub topics which were not taken into account.
I appreciate your observations on the GD, Sangamithra. What about the content? The ideas that were discussed. The body language of the participants? Please record your observations on these aspects also.
DeleteMany relatable points were given in the discussion. Each and everyone had their own way of expressing their thoughts. Their level of confidence while speaking has to be noted.

Group Discussion is not only about discussing a topic in the given time but also it is a great chance given to us to express our ideas and opinions.By group discussion we are able to learn new things and acquire knowledge on the topic in others point of view.We are able to see and understand the perspective of others.
In the above Group discussion the students clearly pointed out their opinions in a clear and abstract way, so that others could also understand at ease.We must also does not interfere when the other one is speaking, everyone must be given a chance to express their opinion.
In a group discussion we must not get deviated from the given topic,we must not speak bad about the idea the others say,we can only say whether the point said by others is correct or not.
We must also follow a good sitting posture. In the video the girl was sitting in a dead center posture, this shows that the girl is confident on herself. She is not worried about what others will think of her.Even though this shows others that she is confident, sitting in this manner will be a great disrespect shown to others by us.We must sit in a manner that is both comfortable to us and also respectful to others.
We must not get offended by the points others say, they are just expressing their view.We should not be afraid of telling our ideas due to the fear of being criticized.
Time management is the next important thing that matters, it is good that we are having a healthy group discussion but we must also finish our discussion and come to a conclusion in the given time.We should not be get reminded by others that you have only limited time.we should make it short and sweet. So everybody in a group discussion must follow proper time management.

Group discussions are generally conducted to make the participants involve in healthy
and creative conversation and arrive at the conclusion. Here in this video, each participants have put forward their views and substantiated their argument . The discussion went like a chain. It seems to be very natural.
Each person had spoken both the pros and cons of the topic. The body language of some participants is really impressive. They were aware of their body gestures.
The way ,they substantiated their view was really amazing. They didn't blindly accept the idea of a person. When a person's view seems to be odd, others conflicted spontaneously.
In a healthy GD ,every person must be given equal opportunity to express their views.
If someone monopolizes a person or a conversation, they talk a lot or stop other people being involved. The girl in this video completely monopolized the discussion.
There were some deviations from the topic, but however they managed to get into the stream. They have utilized the time in an effective manner. The way, they concluded is really awesome.

Group discussion is done general in order to share our opinions with others and conclude whether our views about a particular topic were right or wrong and it is the place where we find a solution for a issue while working as a team.
In this group discussion they started their conversation with the cultural perspective later on they moved on to other sub topics but some of it were irrelevant to the topic like that a girl among them who said women at the present were not secure it sounds quite odd because women were strong and have will power to fight for their rights to be secure in this modern era. I personally feel not everyone in the group were equally involved in the conversation.
They had taken their views naturally, they expressed their views randomly they didn't wait for their turns, they maintained eye contact among them as well as they maintained a good body position. when a person among them was unable to express his views immediately the next one took the chance , it had to be done while working as a team.
They expressed their views with suitable example and related it with the present scenario, though not everyone agree with their opinion they provided enough evidence to prove their opinion. Overall their conversation had many aspects with various pros and cons.
Though they had many controversies among them, but at last they arrived at a good conclusion. It's an important aspect of group discussion.
Group discussions act as a medium or platform where one can put forth their ideas and thoughts in relation with the provided topic or motion. People have different opinions regarding most topics - conflicting opinions, neutral opinions and even the same opinions. However, most conversations in today's world does not allow one to express the ideas fully due to restrictions and fear. A group discussion is an activity that is conducted to overcome this barrier. And the supplied video is a really good example of how a group discussion works and what is expected from in a group discussion.
ReplyDeleteFirst and foremost, the whole point of the group discussion is to express your views. The group discussion given did involve participation from all members, albeit some were more active than others. The discussion started off with a proper introduction where a member defined what modernization is and the conversation picked up from there. Although the conclusion was sub-par, it was satisfactory.
Each individual had something to say about the topic(effect of modernization on Indian culture) ranging from moral, economic, religious and ethical perspectives. Few of them argued that the changes that modernization brought about was positive in our country as it completely abolished certain traditional practices such as sati by spreading awareness of the evil of such a violent tradition.
There were still few who argued that modernization ruined India's identity as the people are trying to imitate Western culture instead of holding onto the rich diverse culture that our country has been built on. Fashion and women rights were brought to light which seemed like relevant topics. However, other members argued the relevancy of this subtopic as it didn't provide an substantial input to the topic.
I disagree with some of the facts that were said, especially the one regarding the independency of women in the past being ruined by modernization. I feel like the group should have addressed that point with more levity.
Some members were really critical(I think his name was Santosh, pink shirt) with their responses and provided apt examples to support their arguments.
Unfortunately, a pattern was noticed where two to three of the members were debating back and forth while the rest of the group took up a spectator seat. A moderator and initiator was clearly set between the members.
Some instances of interruptions were noted, but they were carried out formally and hence did not come out as rude.
The conclusion didn't seem up to the standards as no where through the discussion do they mention a hand in hand development of both culture and modernization. The discussion was more centered on the pros and cons of both the topics. The conclusion was an ideal answer but I do not feel that the given conclusion truly concluded the discussion they had.
Finally, the most appealing part of this discussion was the fact that it seemed completely natural and did not seem forced. They had an organized approach but it didn't seem scripted.
Overall, it was a positive discussion as most issues were addressed. However there is still room for improvement and I hope and believe that our discussions will adapt and improve on this provided example.

Group discussion is a communicative methodology that is usually performed to analyse a given circumstance or a problem.
In the above video a group of students are asked to discuss the topic:"effects of modernization on our culture".
The most important aspect in a group discussion would be defining the given topic and i felt that the group precisely defined the question.
Moving on,in many instances the discussions went off track but a couple of students acted as a facilitator to bring back the discussion to the right track.
The interation was healthy and the participants did not shy away from making bold statements. Also there was not any personal tagerting which is commendable.
But i also felt that not all members participated enthusiastically, few opted to remain quite. On the other hand it is quite evident that everyone paid utmost attention to others opinion.
There were ample examples cited to make one's argument stronger. As a team they managed to utilise the given time quite well.
The body language of the participants looked commanding and confident, this acts as a major advantage when one's performance is evaluated
Finally during the conclusion they summed all the important points and provided few solutions to the problems discussed thus completing on a high note .
Overall the Group discussion was very professional and entertaining with minor flaws

A Group Discussion is done to voice-out people’s opinions on a particular topic, to know others perspectives on that topic and possibly come up with a solution if it really needs a solution. There are multiple reasons why we conduct Group Discussions, it helps each individual person think critically, it increases confidence in a person and it helps build team morale which is quite essential in modern times. Group Discussions are meant to be organized, precise, logical, and the members should try as much as they can to not deviate from the topic. Another important thing about a Group Discussion is that each person has to be spontaneous and it shouldn’t seem scripted. The given GD is a perfect example of all the aforementioned things required in a GD and not to forget this is an example of a Factual GD. The girl started off in the right way, by defining the given topic which is – Has modernization sacrificed our culture?
The first thing I noticed is that all the members are listening carefully to what the other person has to say and not interrupt them in the middle. Pretty much everyone expressed their thoughts except for one person (the guy wearing the white shirt sitting right in the middle), and I didn’t like the fact that NONE OF THE MEMBERS BROUGHT HIM INTO THE DISCUSSION. So, obviously like I stated before everyone spoke clearly and delivered their opinions precisely. They did deviate from the main topic at times, but that is inevitable in a GD. If I’m being honest, the given topic is very subjective so I personally feel that multiple sub-topics were required. The main thing we all should notice is that they weren’t rude to each other when they politely disagreed to what the other person has to say and they weren’t biased which I think is critical in a GD. There was a little bit of banter here and there which may not seem necessary but I feel it should be there because it would make the GD livelier and more enthusiastic. Only one person throughout the whole GD bothered to ask others a question and tried to bring others into the discussion and get to know what they think about it, so he deserves a special mention. Honourable mentions to Lekshaman, Santosh and the girl who started by defining the Group Discussion because I personally feel they were the ones who spoke were very clearly and they stood by their point.

Group discussions are a medium to exhibit one's views, improve critical thinking ability and to enhance communication skills.GD'S are generally held to stimulate reflective thinking among members and to exchange and share ideas freely and arrive at a conclusion.GD's are essential in today's society to overcome hesitation and fear. The provided video is the best example of how a GD should be developed and what are the things required in a Group discussion.
The basic criteria of a group discussion are the ability to express our views and substantiate with it. Almost every participant was involved in the discussion, though a few seemed dominating. The introduction of the discussion was distinct and explained the definition of modernisation.
The way that the people opposed the other’s views were like a healthy conversation and it didn’t lead to conflict. Each and every person had a new point to substantiate with their opinion. The participants stated the change in Indian culture, ethics, religious and spiritual beliefs due to modernisation. The fact of modernisation is not westernisation was expressed by the individuals. Those who supported modernisation stated that modernisation has reduced many superstitious beliefs and evil practices like child marriage and sati.
Some participants who opposed modernisation stated that India has its own culture and tradition and it is demolished due to so-called modernisation. They also stated that Indians should be proud of the fact of who they are and should not imitate western countries to become a developed country.
Though the topic deviated at some points, the participants managed to hold back to the topic and passed on. Some participants were critical about their views and were able to briefly exhibit their statements.
The way the participants concluded was an ok level and the overall discussion seemed very professional even though the group had some minor shortcomings.

Group discussion exercises are used to assess general behaviour traits such as listening skills, social skills and problem solving skills. It helps in Learning more .It increases your understanding of a subject or a lesson. It helps in generating more ideas about a topic. It lets you know about your mistakes and weaknesses and helps you build confidence in yourself.
In the above video each individual expressed their views and opinions about the topic given to them. They analyzed it in different perspectives.
They considered many sub topics realted to the main topic.
Body language is the language which resemble our inner feelings like nervousness ,confidence etc.So body language is the one which matters a lot in GD.
They involved all the participants and almost all of them raised their opinions without waiting for their turns. They also justified their views with some examples which should be appreciated.
Even though the topic switched in middle they were able to come out of it . Almost all of them were against a girl's view that women are not secure due to modernaisation which sounds odd,but instead being quiet she was trying to explain it. she is not worried about being criticized.
Finally their conclusion involved all the highlights of their discussion.

First of all, the group discussion is well organized and the topic is very much relevant to the present situation. The contents of their discussion are related to the topic.
Their body language, gestures, language, their way of speaking all are good. They starts the discussion with a definition to the term Modernization. I agree with the girl's definition " Modernization is a process of progression, development, and adaptation for a better situation without intervening our culture. And one thing to say about her is at one phase she interrupts the other girl(green sudi). As I observe the girl(green sudi) talks as Modernization destroys our culture. Her points are not wrong but I think her speech is too long , she might be precise at her points. This made the others to interrupt and divert the subtopics. But it is really appreciated she boldly expressed her opinions even untill the end she never changed her points.
I think except that girl many are talks only about the advantages of Modernization. Even when they talk about agriculture someone says that even farmers thank Modernization because of the new inventions and technologies in agriculture. It can't be acceptable because though Modernization brings progression and developments, it makes many people to move from the rural to urban society. It causes pollution and change in the climate . These factors highly affects agriculture and it forces many farming families to move to the urban areas. And someone says Modernization increases the employment opportunities, it is acceptable because of the rapid growth in industrialism.
And about the conclusion, I think to the topic "Are we sacrificing our culture in name of Modernization" the given conclusion is not acceptable or convinced. What he says is correct that we should not stop the progression. We have to be Modernized in order to be up-to-date with the world. Everyone is trying or working hard for advancement or betterment in their life. At the same time one should not deny the fact that because of the Modernization and industrialism we change our ideas, life style, social behaviors and thus we are losing our culture slowly.

A group discussion is one in which a topic is given to a group and the topic is discussed for about ten to twenty minutes. This is the process where the exchange of ideas and opinions takes place. It is the modern way of assessing a student's personality and thought.
Here, the topic given is “sacrificing culture in the name of modernization". There were 10 members in this GD. About 4 members dominated the GD,5 members just gave their attendance and the final 1 guy who was sitting in the middle wearing white shirt didn't even utter a word. There were no moderators who made him give his opinion. The group discussion lasted for about 20 minutes.
There was an initiator, an orange color dressed girl who gave a proper and precise explanation about the topic and started the group discussion. It was Brilliant.she was one of the dominant participants. She was not a critical thinker but she was giving a lot of factual inputs to the GD ie)she was saying about what commonly happens in today's world.
The second dominant participant was the guy with a pink colored shirt. He was giving his opinions and thoughts about the fact which others said. He has a critical thinking mind as he made others to believe what he says.
The green color dressed girl spoke well. She was dominant in this GD. She gave a lot of ideas in this GD, but then she was not able to explain and give a justification for her ideas. She could have given it.
The guy wearing a blue shirt was also dominant. He was just comparing culture and modernization. He had a lot of knowledge in comparing but didn't say how one affects others.
The other members just reacted and gave one or two of their thoughts. The should have raised their voices.
Lastly, nobody could properly summarize the topic. The guy wearing a light blue color shirt gave a conclusion but it is not the proper solution for their discussion, somehow he has managed.
Having an overall look: The GD was good.

Group discussion is an effective way to arrive at a solution to problems by revealing your thoughts and views on that specific topic. One great thing about group discussion is even if you have less knowledge about the given topic ,you will get to know more and think in different perspective by listening to others point of view. In the video the group discussed about modernization Vs cultural values. One main problem was, many of the members took so much time to discuss about the sub topics than the main topic. At the same time they also covered many aspects like democracy, religion, freedom, dressing ,lifestyle and so on. Mentioning historical events and statistics made the content more valid. The entire group naturally took the turns and that made the entire discussion more interesting and natural.
Talking about the body language, some members completely lost their eye contact at some point of their discussion. Most of the members participated completely and hence they were able to raise questions against their group member. Also the way they interrupted was so professional and their overall sitting posture was also good. The conclusion part could have been better since it didnt summarised all their points . As a viewer this discussion definitely made me to think my perspective and that's what GD's are meant to do.

The purpose of a group discussion
is not to win an argument or to amuse others.
It is to explore and discover through interaction with other people.
Encouraging the non participants tactfully in a way that demonstrates the sincerity of your interest in their views is very important but here the active one's didn't do that. Of course everyone had a good body language .
The topic is quite interesting . Not all are active but at the end the inactive one's too responded and everyone did listen well which is very important for a group discussion.
Most of the time the discussion went off the track. But some people managed to bring it back. All participants are involved and most of them demonstrated their opinion with examples. They didn't wait for their turn. One girl took lot of time to give her opinion . She was dragging the time but then a boy insisted her to finish it in short. Few were against her but she was strong in her opinion.
Modernisation is a process by which a country moves from having a traditional, agrarian, rural society to having a more secular, urbanised, industrialized society.
It played an important role in the invention of the internet, medical and agricultural facilities. But also has negative effects such as deforestation, climate changes and pollution.
Time keeping, encouraging, listening, group tension relieving and recognizing when to move on to the next topic is a key contribution to a good discussion.
Most of the above aspects are satisfied. And the conclusion was good enough but it can be better. Overall as a group the discussion was good.
It is important for people to use the concept of modernisation in a constructive manner. Instead of focusing on uneven development a holistic approach should be carried out to get the desired result.

Group discussion (GD), by virtue of the term, means exchange of views by participants on a given subject. The whole idea is to bring together a set of people on a common platform to share their ideas, thereby giving an opportunity to exhibit not only their knowledge, but also to understand and enhance their learning by absorbing the thoughts of other people.
Since GD brings together a group of people holding diverse opinions, it also perceived as one of the sought after ways to arrive at solutions to problems. Because of the fact that people bring in a wide range of insights, GDs help in changing the thought process from a narrow to a wider view, thereby paving the way to solutions.
GDs necessitate the contribution of ideas and thoughts, the participants are required to be listen keenly to others’ observations. In this sense, group discussions are a fantastic way to enhance listening skills, and also boost the confidence of speakers by engaging them and encouraging them to express their thoughts.
As the topic discussed here is modernization and cultural values the teammates took their chances and expressed their views about the topic including both pros and cons. The ones who supported modernization claimed the fact that only because of modernization several superstitious beliefs were abolished. And the ones who opposed modernization claimed that it destroys the culture of the people as a slow poison and we must not adapt the western culture. The questions were raised at a correct time that made the GD look good.
Though a few teammates had no eye contact and didn't express it to the full the overall GD looked good as if it is natural and the ones who dominated the speech made the GD look efficient.

A group discussion is a group of individuals, typically who share a similar interest, who gather either formally or informally to discuss ideas, solve problems, or make comments.
Modernisation is nothing but adopting modern ways and ideas for the betterment of the society. It is a tradition for our country's progress and it doesn't mean rejecting our own traditions and cultures,One of the person said that if he wears a dhothi and walks on the road he would be mocked ,but this is not at all relevant to modernization, just by wearing modern outfits one cannot be called modern. We often misinterpret modernization as imitating western styles and cultures.
This is actually termed as westernization.I don't believe that modernity is related to his/her way if dressing up.
I strongly disagree with the other woman(Sharon Rebecca)'s opinions. She said that the women of the past wore sarees which covered their entire bodies and women of today are wearing sarees with sleeveless blouses.Again, here, modernization is related to change in the way of dressing. Also she said that a woman wears a mangalasutra just to show that she belongs to someone. This is deniable ,being a woman herself ,how could she refer women as "properties" of men.Later she defined Indian culture as where women were secured and protected by their spouses. But why would we need security, in what way we are less superior to men?Why could not we protect ourselves?
On the whole , the GD was very well conducted.I appreciate the first participant who initiated the discussion with a good definition of " modernisation" .As far as the group dynamics are concerned ,the group had good cooperation with each other, allowed each other to express his/her views clearly. Each member participated actively ,expect for one or two.Everyone was audible and also spoke fluently. They also generated a lot of contents during the GD .Though they covered a wide range of subtopics,I personally feel that they should have been more coherent and relevant to be main topic that was given to them. They could have talked more about how modernization had paved way for development in our culture, about the history of modernization and they could have brought out various examples and instances .I feel that they had deviated from the topic in the course of discussion.

It is a topic based GD on "culture vs modernization" . The first person who initiated the GD on this topic stated a good definition for modernization. She stated that modernization does not intervene with the traditional values whereas it is "process for our progress". Which according to me is a right view on modernization. But I won't agree with the second point because modernization won't bring only advantages it also brings more disadvantages to the society and the world. Coming to the points of clothing. I won't agree with all the views about clothing. Because wearing modern clothes doesnot mean we are forgetting tradition. It is related to our comfort. We wear dress for our comfort. They also shared a good view about culture that culture is not constant and it changes from time to time which is undeniably a truth.
They also mentioned good points about modernization like universal brotherhood, advancement in transportation, more health benefits, communication over long distance, eradicating illiteracy and creating a better world with out caste. They also said that modernization has its significance in developing various employment sector. for example, Introduction of truck and other machines for agricultural benefits. Which is a good view.
Overall, all the speakers expressed their views. Everyone got their own chances and they utilised it very well. In the middle of the GD they spoke about some other topics that are not related to the given topic. Which they might have been avoided. But the real question for GD is
"are we sacrificing culture in the name of modernization? ". But these speakers expressed their views on "culture vs modernization ". But on the topic"culture vs modernization"they mostly covered all the points in the given time. If they were not conversing about unrelated things they might have covered even more points in the given time.

The topic given for the group discussion was "Are we sacrificing culture in the name of modernisation"
The conclusion the group arrived at was we can't stop progress or development and must accept it as it comes, but we must learn to incorporate our culture in the modern lifestyle, which is very acceptable.
However, through the course of discussion there were several points that were considered that lacked relevance to the topic and a deviation could be observed.
Generalising the whole discussion, the positives and negatives of modernisation was stated very clearly. But there was very little light shed on the topic at hand, that is, if we are progressing putting our culture at stake. A few good points such as modernisation has helped culture evolve into something more practicable, for example, due to abolition of sati, the caste system. Modernisation has helped create a world that's more liberal and free of discrimination. Another good point was modernisation exposes you to many new ideologies that you can choose what you believe in and not be driven by what's handed down to you, be it even with religion.
The group pointed out the negative impacts of modernisation too. They right emphasised that modernisation disregards our indeginous ways of living. Increased influence and admiration of the west makes us ignore or rather disrespect our own values.
It felt like the group led the discussion more on whether or not we need modernisation and said very little about it's effect on culture.
Interms of content, several points were considered, some relevant and some irrelevant to the topic. For instance, talking about unemployment has nothing to do with losing out on culture .
Several subtopics were considered however nothing led to a discussion largely on the topic .
The group dynamics was very good. There was active participation from most. They took turns naturally and led the discussion very formally . Apart from two members, everyone took many turns and suggested many new ideas to discuss on, they asked questions, opposed certain ideas, guarded off deviation, and added to someone else's points. There was once when the group largely opposed against a dark by a fellow member when the discussion seemed rather chaotic as they spoke out of turn but it rested back almost immediately to proceed smoothly.
The body language of all the participants must be appreciated. They all maintained eye contact and were firm as they spoke. No one looked anxious or disinterested.
The language used by the participants was good. Everyone could clearly understand what another member was trying to put forth. There was effective communication between everyone.
The organisation was also good. The group discussion started by stating how we look at modernisation and moved onto quoting instances where we have adopted modern ways of life giving up our very own culture. There was a minimal discussion on how giving up some old cultural ideals benefits the society at large. But soon, the discussion shifted to focus on merits of modernisation. I would say the discussion was not organised interms of selecting subtopics of relevance.
Individual participation must be appreciated. Most of them spoke very well. The girl who spoke first, the boy next to her and the boy who sat at the left most position made very relevant points. The others contributed to the discussion but didn't perceive the essence of the topics and focussed largely on whether or not modernisation helps.
Overall, the group discussion did highlight few points that are significant to the topic but mostly dealt with irrelevant and rather incoherent ideas.

The topic is culture vs modernisation.
GD is not only about the individual's knowledge about the topic .But mainly about interpersonal skills.Leadership and team spirit will be tested which is noted in a very few. Few of them took the initiative to introduce some subtopics so that they can involve others .
Now coming to the topic , culture at best can be defined as the shared way of living of a group of people at a particular time .So it logically follows that it is very normal for culture to change with time.
And modernization has changed culture only for better
Things like feudalism , untouchability, sati pratha and child marriage are no more and we have made remarkable progress in the fields of agriculture and medicine.
Now coming to the clothing of women ,it does nicely depicts the timely changes as society brought equality for them. In india, earlier most of women, even working one had to wear saree, now ladies prefer salwar suit and even some corporate women wear shirt pant. The right wing people oppose this, left wing support the equality of women.
But we should be proud that our culture is not something superfluous that it can be damaged by modernisation. It has stood the test of time .
Modernisation has brought many good changes too .
We can't blame as like that . Modernisation is a much needed one . Westernisation is the one which is not needed .
The GD was fine with discussing a lot more within the time . Bringing in subtopics made it a better GD .But in the middle they deviated from the topic .Some handled it and brought the GD back into the topic .Some didn't conversed much.Body language was fine .And using phrases like in my opinion , I agree with made it a formal GD .I think the conclusion could have been better.
Overall Modernisation doesn't ruin our culture .And modernisation is often confused with westernisation.

Group discussions (GD) are a very important aspect of group communication. Group discussions are a creative and dynamic activity which stimulates reflective thinking among the members. Group discussions may be defined as an activity in which a small number of persons meet face to face and exchange and share ideas freely or attempt to reach a decision on a common issue.
In a group discussion, an individual’s thought process is influenced by the views and opinions of the other members. It also depends on where and in which direction the mood of the discussion moves. In a group discussion, each participant is free to speak his views. A successful discussion involves both listening and speaking.
The group discussion which you are shared is about modernization and cultural values. The half of the teammates conveyed that because of modernization , the people who had superstitious beliefs are considerably reduced. Remaining students disagreed the point and said that modernization destroys the cultural values among the people who are in depth with traditional styles. The students think that the modernization is needed for development of the country. The students also depict an example that if an American walks in front of them they would consider him as modern which they feel that modernization comes in place of culture.
They did deviate from the main topic at times. The main thing is that they weren’t rude to each other when they politely disagreed to what the other person has to say and they weren’t biased which I think is critical in a GD.
The girl who was dominant in the GD came with many useful points , and other students didn’t raised the voice at times.
Overall the GD was professional and it has no artificial elements.

Starting of with the crux of it, a Group Discussion is a commodious forum to confer on a particular topic of interest, scrutinize it from various perspectives and finally reach to some sort of a common conclusion. The best part of a GD is that ideas keep pouring in from different directions and analysis of the issue becomes much simpler, sharp as well as efficient.
Coming to the illustration shared , the first impression would be the fact that there is an incessant flow of ideas from the participants throughout the discussion. This is in fact the most important point as a GD without ceaseless content wouldn’t be continuous and would have redundant breaks all over. But the glitch was that they started deviating quite far from their topic which originally was “Culture Sacrifice in the name of Modernisation “.This was especially evident when they were discussing about the increase in the choice of cars, etc which I personally felt was highly irrelevant. On the other hand, the talks on the other sub topics were extremely well-constructed and to the point.
As far as group dynamics is concerned, all of them did respect the views of their fellow participants by allowing them to completely finish voicing out their views except probably in one or two situations due to the urge to make a point which is quite natural. But the one thing that I felt was amateurish was that all of them started to unknowingly target a person(probably her views were not acceptable) and treat her as a prey. This is not a good sign of a healthy discussion forum.
A commendable thing to note is that although some of them weren’t as active and involved as the others, all of them maintained their posture from the beginning till the end and no one looked left out. Also, throughout the course of 20 mins, they maintained eye contact with the person talking.Their body languages make it evident that most of them were confident and fervent towards the topic except a few who although were attentive , but faced a lack of ideas.
A highly subjective topic like this would require a lot of critical thinking and expository analysis which I felt very few people used(pink shirt and the blue shirt guy).Although some of them did take the upper hand, I don’t think it showed dominance purely for the fact that everyone did get equal space and all that matters at the end of the day is how effectively you grab your spot.
Coming to my personal views on the topic, modernisation is an extremely important
process which is interestingly irreversible. Its positive effects are more far fledged than its short comings and I’ve never felt that this process has intervened in our cultural systems. This is because my definition of culture has nothing to do with the way I dress.Just because I wear a dhoti or a veshti, I don’t personify myself as an angelic Indian with high standards of morale and culture.I don’t believe in anticipatory bails. Culture for me is simply the human values I believe in and the ethics I trust, as simple as that. And I would confidently say that modernisation hasn’t been successful in bringing about even a tiny little shake into my beliefs.
Overall, although it did have small snags here and there(poor unstable conclusion for instance) , I would consider it as being impressive.

Group discussion is sharing individual ideas with others in a group and this helps everyone to know more about a topic. It provides an opportunity to present one's view about the topic and develops the interacting skills of a person, which is essential to survive in an independent environment.
For a good part of the initial conversation, only a few people were part of the discussion. The speakers were contradicting to each others' points, with no proper bases. Moreover, points were not backed by concrete statistical facts, but generalising their opinions. The good thing is one of the members pointed out that they were deviating from the topic. If he had added further by stating the topic, it would have been more effective. A productive GD must include all participants and solid ideas.
I personally feel that this discussion is not to the core of the topic. During the course of discussion some people went off topic. A female dress code changing from saree to sleeveless top does not mean culture sacrifice. Even with sleeveless top our women realize our culture and limit and live upto it in foreign countries.
The actual areas that we have to be worried about modernisation are agriculture, health sector and so on...which none of the participants mentioned. For example we tend to use foreign medicines for our health issues which has many side effects. How many of us know that yoga not only keeps us healthy but also a cure for many health problems. The participants could have made it informative and interesting discussion by mentioning that, the modernisation in Science and Technology I'd unavoidable. Despite these, all participants maintained good etiquette.
I have to disagree with parts of the given reading material.
ReplyDeleteA group discussion is likely to be dominated by those who speak well, not those who are correct. It may not help with understanding the topic or changing people's opinions. It can turn into a series of 'gotcha' moments which make no difference to the topic at hand.
The good thing is that it exposes you to a wider range of opinions.
I am of course playing devil's advocate here because someone has to.
Coming to the discussion, I think it flowed quite well. The tangents into related (or unrelated) topics can make a discussion more enjoyable and the speakers were quick to bring the discussion back to the topic.
All participants spoke clearly, getting their point across and were formal.
The discussion had a few 'difficult group behaviours' - a few participants simply did not participate enough.
Participants were natural and enthusiastic and were unafraid to express their honest views. The discussion was mostly subjective and analogies and anecdotes were used effectively. Most of the participants maintained eye contact and were attentive to others.
There were a few factual mistakes some of which were quickly corrected by other speakers.
The first was regarding prostitution.
The famous quip "Someone once said that politics is the second-oldest profession. I'm beginning to think it bears resemblance to the first" from Reagan of course alludes to prostitution being the oldest profession. Additionally, the ruins of Pompeii, well preserved under the ashes, support that idea.
One of the female participants went on about her admittedly old-fashioned ideas throughout the discussion while being attacked by most of the others. While they may have been correct in pointing out the flaws in her argument, she made a great point about how we should preserve our individuality. There is no shame in being ourselves.
Even though she was in favour of an era where women were kept in line and their individuality suppressed.
Another thing I noted (because agriculture was brought up) was that no one pointed out that the way we do agriculture is very inefficient and only works because of the huge availability of cheap manual labour.
This is unsustainable. In countries with better infrastructure, a small proportion of the population (~10%) can supply enough food and livestock.
Additionally, it is my duty as a computer science student to point out that learning C/C++/Flavour-of-the-month programming languages doesn't help at all. CS is heavily problem-solving and mathematics oriented.
If you cannot solve a problem with one programming language, you cannot do it with any other.
Moving on, one of the male participants talked about change being the only constant (culture, of course, is not sedentary. It is hard to pin down and define) and brought up the fact that no boom lasts. The dotcom bubble will stand testament to that. (Hopefully that bubble also bursts in society).
I was disappointed with a participant who talked regarding American culture. There is no point in pulling down others to make our culture seem better.
The great advantage to 'modernization' is that it has given us unprecedented insight into every part of the world. All of us should appreciate the strengths of other societies and integrate those qualities into our societies.
The 'American Dream' - the idea that anyone can work hard and become wealthy and successful is something we should look to adopt, and the very highly-strung Japanese and Korean societies could use some of our country's 'chalta hai' (go with the flow) attitude so that they can kick back and relax once in a while. (Hikikomori - just google the term. It refers to young people who are so crushed by the weight of expectations that they don't leave the house anymore)
Culture is simply our ideas about life and how we apply them. It is necessary to take off our rose tinted glasses occasionally and be pragmatic with how we live.
Keshav M 2018103038
DeleteVery thorough analysis Keshav. You have evidently given a lot of thought to the ideas generated in the sample GD. You have also made some very pertinent observations on the "behaviour" of the participants. The only thing I did not quite understand was your initial claim - that you had to disagree with some parts of the reading material. Were you referring to the PPT? Kindly clarify.

Group discussion generally acts as a medium to voice out our opinions and an opportunity to respect other's opinions as well. It enhances our critical thinking ability and help combat public fear. Moreover, we also get to learn more about the topic of discussion. In this video, the topic of discussion is "Are we sacrificing our culture in the name of modernization". The discussion began with first defining the term beautifully, and then few others added on their points.
The opposition was done correctly and didn't seem rude. Although, few did interrupt during the course of conversation, it was done politely by using phases like "I would like to differ","I would disagree",etc. The topic given is factual and it would rise to many sub-topics, and most of them were covered. But while covering them, I felt the conversation often went off track and seemed irrelevant to the particular topic. The discussion was engaging and everyone was interested to speak out their points. As usual in every group discussion, there would be few dominating and few mum, this group too had part of its shares but yes, everyone did voice out their opinion atleast once. I feel someone should have moderated to make them speak too.
The most commendable thing is that a green salwar girl often opined contradicting from others and stood on her point, inspite of everyone opposing her every now and then. The pont she said women are not secure due to modernization is something which I wouldn't agree too and she could have substantiated it well in order to seem it convincing enough. Next, the pink shirt guy, substantiated his views with proper instances.which is one of the most important aspects of group discussion. The girl in yellow salwar had a strong voice and seemed confident about what she spoke.
Everyone managed to maintain eye contact which is good. The discussion was more of pros and cons of modernization. Instead they could have even spent considerable amount of time discussing on how modernization and culture go hand in hand. The appreciable fact here is they have expressed the religious and gender perspective in a proper way, as they both might lead to controversial arguments if not done well. Last coming to the conclusion, it is supposed to be summing up of all points collectively discussed about but it wasn't done that particular way. He had to wind up the conversation in short time which could have hampered him from expressing it out well. Overall, it was a healthy discussion and seemed like an apt group discussion.

CULTURE vs MODERNIZATION
First of all,”modernization” is, as the first participant said ,adopting modern ways and ideas for the betterment of society. It is a transition for our country’s progress and it does’nt mean rejecting our own traditions and cultures,Then the other person said that if he wears a dhoti and walks on the road he would be mocked ,but this is not at all relevant to modernization,Just by wearing modern outfits one cannot be called modern. We often misinterpret modernization as imitating western styles and cultures.
This is actually termed as westernization.I don’t believe that modernity is related to his/her way of dressing up.
I strongly disagree with the other woman (Sharon Rebecca)’s opinions. She said that the women of the past wore sarees which covered their entire bodies and women of today are wearing sarees with sleeveless blouses.Again, here, modernization is related to change in the way of dressing. Also she said that a woman wears a mangalsutra just to show that she belongs to someone. This is deniable ,being a woman herself, how could she refer women as “properties” of men.
Later she defined Indian culture as where women were secured and protected by their spouses. But why would we need security ,in what way we are less superior to men?Why could not we protect ourselves?
On the whole, the gd was very well conducted. As said before,I appreciate the first participant who initiated the discussion with a good definition of “modernisaton”.As far as the group dynamics are concerned, the group had good cooperation with each other, allowed each other to express his/her views clearly. Each member participated actively, except for one or two.Everyone was audible and also spoke fluently. They also generated a lot of contents during the gd.
Though they covered a wide range of subtopics ,I personally feel that they should have been more coherent and relevant to the main topic that was given to them. They could have talked more about how modernization had paved way for development in our country and how it did not affect our culture, about the history of modernization and they could have brought out various examples and instances.I feel that they had deviated from the topic in the course of discussion.
thankyou!!

"ARE WE SACRIFICING OUR CULTURE IN NAME OF MODERNISATION"
A group discussion is an open discussion on a particular topic discussed by a group of people. But, it doesn't appear to be a group discussion. Because in a group discussion every one needs to take part actively or at least try to analyze the topic by bringing forward some ideas. Only five people constantly discussed the topic, while others being idle. Three to four of them dominated the discussion not giving chances to others to talk. They just grabbed the mike from them without allowing them to complete.
I like the body language of them. It was perfect. They maintained eye contact while speaking. The language and tone were so amazing. Most of them spoke very well. They were relevant to the topic. Sometimes they went out of the topic. As someone said due to the intervention of foreign companies, some Indian companies completely went down. I cannot understand how our culture is affected here. We always prefer the best quality products. So it doesn't depend on the country, producing it. We know India produces high-quality tea.
People from other countries buy tea from India. So we cannot say, they are not obeying their culture as they buy tea from India.
One of them said, before 30 years, his grandfather wears dhoti. But due to modernization, he cannot follow his tradition.
But, before 1000 years, his grandfather's ancestors used to wear leaves as a dress. If we taught tradition to be followed, then now also we would wear leaves as dresses. we can't blindly follow our culture. Due to modernization only, we abolished sati, child marriage, etc. We need to sacrifice these stupid practices saying it as a culture.
I like the way they concluded, that we cannot stop modernization rather we must learn ourselves to blend culture with modernization. It is agreeable. Overall it was a good discussion with lots of information and facts.
Thank you

A Group discussion refers to an open discussion where group of people exchange their thoughts and ideas.Group members analyse the topic and bring their thoughts on the matter. It focuses to make decisions, solve a problem and implement new extensive ideas. It improves our ability to think critically. It increases our confidence, improves listening skills, etc.
In this GD, there are 10 members participating on the topic "Culture Vs Modernisation".On the whole, four to five members were active in the complete session. Each one was given a chance to express their opinions.None of the opinions were supressed. They maintained a healthy conversation without any problems. They maintained a good body language and a good posture. No one was criticised or targeted.
Firstly,a clear explanation was given on Modernisation.Opposition was raised on each one's opinion but still it was a healthy conversation.Modernisation was clearly explained and distinguished from Westernisation. They explained the changes of Indian culture due to religious beliefs like Sati. They clearly substantiated their opinions with apt examples. There were some deviations from the topic and they still managed to get back to their point. One of the participants was asking many questions regarding each one's opinion.Modernisation was mostly spoken about transportation and not on one's freedom.Indian culture was also spoken on problems of women .It would be proper if more points would have been included on culture. Each point was expressed in a convincing way.None of them was biased against anyone. Finally, few points were dotted out clearly.Conlcusion was made convincing for everyone.Overall,it was good.

A group discussion is where a group of people assemble and discuss about a particular topic and also find a possible solution if the topic requires it.It is really a good way to find solutions because every person involved in the GD expresses his her opinion about that topic which may have a valid reason behind it.The given video on GD had no pauses during the discussion which makes it pleasant to watch and it is also appreciable that every person stood up to filling those voids.Initially the GD was dominated by a few people and the others looked as if they are shy to open up.But the things got better as time progressed. Also the people who participated in the GD were strong about their views on the topic and stood by it till the very end though they were opposed by others and also justified why they stood by it.It seemed like they went out of topic at many places, but they were pulled back to the track by others though they covered many subtopics. It also seemed like instead of going general they stayed on with the changes in women. They could have avoided that and should have covered more topics. The attitude and body language of the participants was good but they didnt maintain proper eye contact when they were expressing their views.Only the guy in pink shirt maintained proper eye contact throughout the GD.It is appreciable that there was no quarrel amongst themselves and they waited for others to finish their points. The final conclusion could have still been better because all the points discussed weren’t covered. So,overall it was a good and a very formal group discussion.

Group Discussion is not only about discussing a topic but also it is a great oppertunity to share our ideas and imaginations.By discussing through groups we can learn new concepts on the topic in others point of view.We can see and understand the perspective of others.
Here are some tips for GD:
Be a good listener & support or add to the other points.Speak loudly and clearly. Try to be the first and the last speaker of the discussion.Be confident while speaking
It is a topic based GD on "culture vs modernization" . The first person who initiated the GD on this topic stated a good definition for modernization. She stated that modernization does not intervene with the traditional values whereas it is "process for our progress". Which according to me is a right view on modernization. And the one who spoke about child marriage, caste etc. said that these cruel practices has been reduced due to modernization. Which is also right in my point of view. Also he stated that "modernization brings new good". We dress for our comfort.
Which is somewhat related to original topic but not very accurate. But on the topic"culture vs modernization"they mostly covered all the points in the given time. If they were not conversing about unrelated things they might have covered even more points in the given time

I believe the primary reason GDs are conducted is for individuals to voice out their opinions on a particular topic, test one's communication skills and their ability to work with a team. GDs allow for a variety of ideas to be discussed, explored upon and eventually draw a common conclusion.
The group discussion shared was quite impressive. The most important thing in a GD is for everyone to be able to share their perspectives. In this GD, though all but one spoke, it was very evident that some were more active than the others, probably due to lack of ideas. One student did not get the chance to speak at all even though he had the mic in his hand multiple times. Other than that, i appreciate that everyone respected and listened to each others ideas. The subtopics each individual spoke about were relevant in most cases, and were well substantiated with examples. Although I found that they deviated off topic quite a few times, which is bound to happen in a GD, there were attempts to get back to the main topic of discussion, "Culture Sacrifice in the name of Modernisation". There was a proper introduction to the topic of discussion and all the participants presented good posture and body language throughout. There were few instances of interruptions, but it didn't seem rude. The discussion didn't seem scripted at all, and everyone took turns without it looking planned. I was impressed by the amount of content they spoke about, whether it was relevant or slightly irrelevant, there were no awkward pauses. I felt a slight incoherence between the points made by consecutive people, but again, most of them were attempts to get back to the main topic. No one seemed to dominate the discussion though some had more ideas than the others. I also liked that some questioned the others' views and stood by their own points.
The conclusion wasn't sufficient, and did not touch upon all the ideas discussed. I felt, it was a very ineffective way to conclude and could've been much better.
Overall the discussion was very professional and a good example of how to proceed with a group discussion.

ReplyDeleteObviously, they have given with the controversial topic as Culture vs Modernisation. Cause one pointed out that Devadasi system in temples of India. Thought not all the members were actively did their opinions. Some of them were not in the discussion. May be because of their language inefficiency. which doesn't means they are out of the game. But,those who made their points are did well. Most of the discussions were about feminism, gender equality, sex, illiteracy, food and cloths. They have clear description and some wide knowledge about their topic. In my opinion they may have discussed more like music, like how pop culture evolved and how rap,r&b died like that.. and we the people in india also westernised not modernised. There are difference among modernised and westernised. One women boldly made her point on women need to wear proper cloths that's actually a good opinion. But,what make her lack is that she is not clear about the case. She also don't know how to convey.People think that wearing leggins and so on. Don't make them modern instead make them Westernized.
As,someone pointed out that atomic bombs and all that are all out of the topic. That same guy looks pushy in that group. He makes different sub groups in that topic. The guy one who spoke about the american people welcomes him with a namaste. Once, he knew he was from India. Which means that culture we were following was good. Then why we need to be modernised. Obviously, the reason to modernise is that people getting the jobs on IT Company and not agricultural. As one of them said about the agriculture and the IT companies are in cycle. When people started to starve. They may go and find agriculture as a tool for income. The point cycle may be a critical thinking skill that he may be a "out of box" thinker.
The one thing they made the clear and strong opinion about the marriage. Marriage were forced on the old days.Due to the modern culture.Which may be a good change over from the old culture.
As,A whole they were able to put forward some good ideas, their thought process on the topic, they were able to face each other and talk as at certain points. They were out of the view. But,because of the moderator in the group one who initiated the converstion looks. The overall dicussion brought some conclusion.Even thought they made a brief opinion on the topic they were able to conclude it properly. In overall it looked like a discussion and not like a organised manner.

Group discussion is done to attain various paths of view on a topic. It gives an opportunity to all members to give their ideas and opinion on a certain topic. It increases one's listening skills and confidence in speaking. It is a task, which is generally aimed at understanding and evaluating candidate's behavior in a group.
In this video, 8-9 members take part in group discussion on the topic - "Influence of modernization on culture".The starting went good and in the middle they moved a far from the topic.
Everyone expressed their views in a strong way and helped others to take part. Some people remained inactive throughout the GD.Some didn't have the patience for their turn to talk. They also concluded with suitable points but in a clumsy way.
Everyone who talked voiced out with an good example which made the GD to be more interesting and involving. This team also had a good body language and accent of English.
The most appreciable part is some helped the inactive persons with some key points and pulled them in. And at a certain stage , every started to point a person, which seemed to be awkward.
Finally the inactive ones spoke because of the alarm. They had lost their platform to express their views.
Hereby I convey that group discussion is a platform to showcase our views and enrich our mind with knowledge.

Group discussion refers to a communicative situation that allows its participants to express their views and opinions and share it among other participants. It is a systematic oral exchange of information, views and opinions about a topic, issue, problem or situation among members of a group who share certain common objectives.
The topic being discussed in the video was " Is culture being destroy by modernisation?". The discussion started out well. There were two types of people , one who claimed modernisation is improving the life standards of the people while the others supported the opposite of the idea.
Body language was proper and there was eye contact between the participants. But every member didnt participate equally. There were clear signs of dominance between a few individuals , although they made some valid points. Most of the times , they supported their ideas or arguements with facts and statistics. The discussion went away from the topic a few times. There were no disagreements or any negative signs between the group members. Everyone were interested in taking part in the discussion. Language was proper , no harsh words or comments.
A valid point was made during the discussion. Everything is a cycle. Nothing keeps developing. That's a good point which was made regarding the discussion. Yes people move to cities for IT jobs , but not all people succeed. Modernisation has created unemployment due to the improvement of technology in agriculture. The work of five men could be done by a single man which means four people are unemployed. So yes they tend to move to cities searching for jobs.
Overall , it was an efficient discussion although it went away from the topic a few times. Active presence of each group member was there but not active participation. No one seemed to be disagreeing with the points that were made. It looked like a natural arguement

A perfect group discussion is one in which all the participants have an open mind and share their opinion on the topic and also understand others perspective on the topic.
The topic of discussion in the given video is 'Are we sacrificing culture in the name of modernisation'.We saw active participation from most members of the group but not all. There were a few members who rarely pitched in ideas and there were a few members who kept the discussion alive by sharing their opinions.
I personally liked the way Santosh(pink shirt, second from right) put forward his opinions as he provided examples wherever necessary and whenever he put forward an opposing argument he didn't seem rude.
There was a natural flow in the conversation, nowhere did the group shift topics haphazardly infact all the subtopics were discussed in detail.
It was evident that everyone was interested in the topic and they did not shy away from giving out their honest opinions. At the start of the discussion there were varying opinions in the group with some disagreeing with the topic and some strongly agreeing. But as the conversation moved forward the group as a whole came to the conclusion that modernisation has infact helped develop our culture.
There wasn't any repetition of points by any member which shows that they had a clear idea on the topic.
The members also displayed excellent body language.
This is video ticks most boxes for it to be a very good group discussion.

Group discussions are made to bring out the opinions of a group of people, usually about a common or trending topic. The participants tend to elevate their ideas to others's ideas, but not specifically over them. They agree or disagree with their fellow participants to conclude the discussion with a result, which is accepted by most members of the group through the discussion.
The topic given to the group is about Culture vs Modernisation. It's a general one and almost all the ideas spoken were acceptable. One of the two girls defined the topic and she felt culture should be preferred more.Hence defining and begining to argue is always to nice way to start a GD.Few agreed with her and they waited for everyone to finish and continued. Also, when the duscussion went out of topic and a little bit uncomfortable, the participants compromised the situation to move on.There wasn't any unneccassary waste of time on a particular idea. So,the basic ethics of GD were properly followed by almost everyone in the discussion.
Later, one felt that the girl in green dress was fixating on feminism and modernisation, and culture wasn't relevant there. So,he pointed it out with a decent tone without any attitude, which should be appreciated.Although few others were hogging the mic in the later part of the GD.Many didn't get a chance to voice out because the ongoing matter wasn't nearing to an agreement. The guy with the specs made really good examples and comparisons but he couldn't answer the questions asked to him properly. Finally, the conclusion was to go with the idea of modernisation, with fairly supported arguments and decisions.
There wasn't any conflicts, scapegoating among the group but few arguments remained unnoticed or ignored as only 4 or 5 dominated towards the end.The guy in the middle asked for the mic to speak for the first time, but he was too late and the time to conclude had come. So,although it was a good discussion it can't be quite said as an evenly participated one.Relevance to topic, eye contact, and critical thinking were there and the highlight was almost everyone was attentive when someone else is speaking, which is really a good attribute in the GD.Except one or two,no one hesitated to oppose the arguments.Hence, the GD was interesting and enthusiastic for a very much generalised topic.

Group discussion refers to a communicative situation that allows its participants to express their views and opinions and share it among other participants. It is a systematic oral exchange of information, views and opinions about a topic, issue, problem or situation among members of a group who share certain common objectives.
The topic of discussion in the given video is 'Are we sacrificing culture in the name of modernisation'.We saw active participation from most members of the group but not all. There were a few members who rarely pitched in ideas and there were a few members who kept the discussion alive by sharing their opinions.
This is video ticks most boxes for it to be a very good group discussion.

ReplyDeleteA group discussion is to express our opinions and to come to a conclusion with extensive new ideas. It improves our critical thinking and language skills.Gd has some unique qualities like demonstrating a ideas what we think and gain thoughts of other's.
There were 10 members in this GD. About 4 members dominated the GD .
A clear explanation was given on modernisation. One of the girls kept on insisting about culture of women which was not apt and her opinion was not accepted by her teamate too.The choice of words were acceptable. The other girl made a comparison between the women in modern india and ancient india. I disagree with some of the facts that they were said especially the one regarding the independency of women in the past being ruined by modernisation. I think the group must have addressed clearly. Some clearly explained their opinions which was accepted .Unfortunately, some were dominant and some remained quiet during the discussion.Interruptions were carried out formally without any conflicts. It was a respectful discussion and continued politely. There was a constant flow of ideas. Each and every opinion was supported with an example which was apt.A complete difference between modernisation and westernisation was given.Throughout the discussion, there were pros and cons of the topic. The participants hardly discussed in what way we sacrifice our culture in the name of modernisation.Overall, the gd looks formal and well organised. They brought few points in the conclusion which was more apt.But still proper conclusion could have been given.

A group discussion is a process where a group of individuals express their ideas and opinions about a certain topic given to them. It brings in a large number of different views from different people and helps in better understanding of the topic and at times leads to a clear conclusion.
The group discussion about the topic " Are we sacrificing our culture in the name of Modernization" was quite impressive. The students had actively participated in the discussions except for a few. They had a clear idea of what they were saying and seemed even stronger in voicing their opinions by citing few examples. Well most of them were keen in listening to others and tried questioning them when needed. This clearly shows that the topic was of there interest and they had a good ideas to share. Everyone took turns to speak and it seemed natural. They shared their opinions and maintained good eye contact. The body language of most of the students seemed good while few didn't. The students succeeded in voicing out their opinions strongly and they had good clarity over what they were speaking which was quite evident in the video.
Coming to the negatives of the discussion, I felt that the students failed in defining the topic well. They should have first defined what modernization and culture is , which would have solved a lot of conflicts the students had during the discussion. Everyone had their own understanding of the topic and just kept pouring their views over it one after the other. Though they listened to everyone's opinion, I felt that they didn't think and analyze what the other person was saying and remained strong on their views, which hence lead to a very abrupt conclusion. Though most of them seemed to be very enthusiastic and enjoyed discussing over the topic, some seemed to have lack of ideas and weren't active as the others. Their involvement in the discussion seemed to be forced which wasn't impressive.
Another thing i noticed was that few of them had targeted one student(who had a different view on the topic) which doesn't seem nice and makes the discussion a little unhealthy. Well the conclusion didn't actually seem like one and seemed like a sudden stop to the discussion due to lack of time.
Overall the discussion was good and the students tried covering most areas of the topic while it seemed deviated at a few places. The best part of the discussion was the topic itself. The students showed immense interest in discussing the topic which helped them share a variety of views.

ReplyDeleteGroup discussion is the practice of arriving a suggession about a topic given in a more generalized way . It shows different perspective that a topic is rely on which at some sometimes believe that what they think is what the topic is all about , but when a GD is conducted actually everyone get to know that there are still a idea in way that other's perspective, Thus it helps people to understand mostly all the aspects of the topic which are generalized.
Group discussion is helpful to arrive at a solution which everyone can accept or have to accept thus it achieves it's goal .
As one said in the group that when speaking of Modernisation in society and how it changes the culture the topic gets to stressed on women but for a society both women and men have to be taken as a equal as aspect of the society . For a quite long that one is stressing modernisation over culture on women alone , Anyway another one asked about that thing and get it into the original topic . It seems well behaved at that point of the conversation .
Though the GD had some snags it seems impressive for me.

Group discussion is a platform where we can test our oratory skills, interpersonal skills , and leadership skills . It is meant to arrive at a solution to a problem or a question with the opinions gathered from the people who participated in the discussion.
The topic provided was " Are we sacrificing our Culture in the name of modernization ". The entire discussion seemed completely organized and everything looked natural .
Some of the participants were more active than the others. There were a few who voiced out only a little. Few interruptions can be seen during the discussion and they looked formal. It didn't go rude at any point.
Several sub-topics were dealt during the discussion . Some of the sub-topics were completely off the track but one of the participants gently pulled them back in.
Everyone paid their utmost attention towards the other participant throughout the discussion. One of the participants spoke about Women empowerment and women security in the name of modernization which seemed out of the concept a bit although she tried to bring relevancy.
Some participants were quite inactive and I felt like, the other participants should have initiated them at times , to make them share their perspectives. I really liked the body language everyone had. It was formal and expressive.
Eye contact is the main factor to be followed in GD. Almost all the participants focused the other , while expressing their views. Also every participant defended their opinion with relevant examples which was cool.
The conclusion part was not satisfactory. I felt so because no where in the discussion they mentioned that culture and modernization go hand in hand.

The topic on which the GD revolves is quite argumentative. "Are we losing our culture in the name of modernisation?" Almost each of them expressed their views in a proper manner. Though a question arises if those views were logical are not, still people were able to express in a pretty decent language and most importantly with a better body language. All of them were taking and giving chances except few of them. The discussion didn't turn into a chaos and it wasn't quiet like a library as well.
On analysing the speakers' views on the given topic, two of them were very clear while a lady was very much focussed on women empowerment. Her views would have been more relevant to that topic. There were some deviations from the topic, but that's happens in almost every discussion. Some notable deviations were the talks about prostitution. What link does prostitution have with modernisation impacting on our culture? Yes, we have to agree that modernisation brought by the british has innumerable impacts in our culture both in positive and negative ways. As said by the girl in the panel, expecting a betterment without ourselves adopting a change, isn't proportional. Our country has reached significant heights in the recent decades because of technological development. But that technology needn't impact our character which is the real threat to our culture. As long our personal character is conserved so is our culture. It's not defined specifically by the clothes we wear or way we carry our lifestyle. This idea was brought by a person. He expressed it so well in a crystal clear manner that he would adopt to the changes for the current lifestyle and retain his personal culture as well. Also, one of them pointed out that employment opportunities would be under threat if lives are more automated. It's obvious. Once we reach a stage where robots do all of our works with artificial intelligence fed into it, what value does human have at that point? Though this is a valid point, the person who brought in this idea didn't correlate this to the topic properly. The point can be linked to the topic in several ways. Again there was a talk about agriculture. All the statistical stuff can be considered right. But still agriculture is more specifically an occupation rather than a practice. Of course, there's not a proper life without a healthy food, still all the other budding industries have to be given equal importance.
Several conclusions can be arrived at the end of the discussion. It was argumentative still many other points could have been arrived and many topics which they discussed could have been properly concluded exclusive of them being tabooed ones or not.

A group discussion refers to a communicative situation that allows one to share his/her views and opinions with others. It is a systematic exchange of information, views and opinions about a topic, problem, issue or situation among the members of a group who share some common objectives.
Coming to the video ,the discussion started off with a proper introduction where a member defined what modernization is and the discussion picked up from there. But the hitch was that group started deviating quite far from their topic which originally was“ Is Culture being sacrificed in the name of Modernisation“.Moreover, certain points were not backed by concrete inputs, but were just by generalising opinions.I personally felt that the discussion was not to the core of the topic. But certain sub-topics discussed were well constructed and were to the point . Overall , the discussion was engaging.
The group dynamics were good. Everyone respected each other views .There was active participation from most. Except two people ,everyone took turns naturally and suggested good ideas to discuss on, they raised questions, opposed certain ideas, guarded off deviation, and added to someone else's points. Throughout the discussion, the participants maintained a good body language , had eye to eye contact , a good posture throughout the discussion are all the signs to show that the participants were involved and confident.
The conclusion didn't seem up to the standards and could have been better, but it comprised the highlights of the discussion. I felt that the group(except 2 or 3) lacked to put up some critically thought ideas , if done would have been more interesting. I feel that Modernisation is what has changed the World to a better place , and it is irresistible and I strongly believe that Modernisation has nothing do with culture because culture is just the values We believe in and our ideas towards life.
Overall , I would consider the group discussion being impressive.

ReplyDeleteGroup discussions are basically analyzing topics from different perspectives of the group members in a detailed manner.
The group discussion was very formal and well mannered. The main drawback was few participants were very enthusiastic and were trying to voice out their opinions without listening to other's standpoint, this is clearly seen when some of them were constantly trying to take the mike from the speaker when they haven't even finished. Few of the participants were inactive the whole time and didn't contribute to the discussion. The group dynamics took a big hit over these mistakes. Moreover the other participants didn't try to indulge them or gel with them.
The content spoke in the discussion was over a wide range of subtopics and covered various domains and appropriate examples. Although it was about a variety of issues, proper definition of the topic was lacking and it was the main reason for the discussion getting off track at many instances. This in turn led to wasting few minutes in an irrelevant discussion, but few of them were clever enough to cut it off and bring it back on track.
Body language of few members were very professional and profound. Especially the first three speakers who initiated the conversation sounded very confident, bold and impressive but were very dominating throughout. Some of the speakers weren't very clear and loud and hence, their viewpoints weren't reaching or getting recognized effectively. I really appreciate Sharon Rebecca's courage to stand by her views when most of them were attacking her but at the same time she was one of the reasons for the topic going off track and it was wrong on her part to justify whatever illogical points she put forth. Moreover many a times she was contradicting herself and her explanations were baseless.
Overall the main positives I would take from this discussion would be the professionalism with which the discussion happened and the impressive body language and confidence with which few participants carried themselves. Other than this, the deep analyzing of the topic was fantastic.

According to me, group discussion is a miniature of a society. Society is a place where people with different mindscape come to a common platform to carry on their life in a harmonious manner. Similarly, group discussion is a concept where people of different mindscape dive deep into the given title and resulting in a meticulous research in it. The quality of a GD is directly proportional to the number of participants. As everyone participating in a particular GD have a specific mindset, the way of analysing the title is definitely different. Actually the participants are considered as the representative of different people in a society. So we will have a diverse opinion, ideas which paves the way for the indelible understanding of the given issue.
GD is completely different from arguments bcoz a particular topic is discussed in the former whereas the topics are argued without any satisfactory points. In latter, Dignity is usually maintained in their GD which helps us in the understanding of the title. Their GD has several positive aspects in it like speaking or expressing ourselves boldly, gaining knowledge to be strong in our stand, listening to the speaker, focusing and indulging ourselves into an issue, respecting others and maintaining our dignity.
They developes eye to eye interaction which makes them a respectable figure among them. It helps us to learn patience and thus it gives various solutions to a particular problem. This widens the path of solving the problem .In GD Some persons were quite inactive and I felt that they didn't share their perspectives. I really liked the body language everyone had. It was formal and expressive.
Thus by going through the above GD it is clearly evident that GD are highly effective in understanding a situation, the way of approach it and finally the way of improving it.

Group discussion is sharing of information or thoughts about a particular topic with all other fellow participants involved in the discussion. The given topic should be logically analysed. GD is especially used in recruitment process to short list the
participants. It brings out the qualities of team coordination, language skills and Critical thinking.
The topic of the given GD is 'influence of modernization in culture'. They had a healthy discussion on the topic. Most of the participants are actively involved in the discussion. The discussion was well initiated by defining the topic. some of the participants seems to be dominating the discussion while few participants were not actively involved. Each
participants stand by there views, none of them withdrawed their ideas.every participants showed a polite gestures, Even when they are arguing they were not too offensive. One of the participant shared her thoughts on women safety in the morden society. Even though nearly every other participants opposed her thoughts she stood by her thoughts and gave valid points. It seems the participants are fighting for mike, this shows that they have a very good interest in expressing their views and eagerly waiting for the turns. There is person who kept the discussion on track. Whenever the topic deviates he change the track of discussion to the topic. There are few participants who cannot share their points due to domination of few members. There is an argument from the starting between two members which kept the discussion to move on. The participants showed a good body language and they are seemed to be relaxed in making their points. There is a continuity in the discussion which made it to look natural.
finally the GD was well concluded by summarizing the discussion.

As we know, group discussion is a discussion which was made by a group of people to share their ideas even they may support or against the certain topic to get a conclusion.
In the given video, they have started the discussion with the definition of the given topic. They discussed with different perspectives. They also shared their experience. After sometime, they have distracted into few sub topics. Then they came back to the topic which was appreciatable and nice.
In that group, a girl has told her thoughts with great determination and not distracted by the other's thought. Some of them explained their thoughts with perfect examples. Everyone in the group had a chance to share their ideas.
In the group discussion, everyone followed the cretiria of GD like eye contact, listening other's ideas and take a chance to share their ideas. Moreover their body language are good. These are the some points I want to share about the video.

Group Discussion, as the name itself indicates, is a group activity carried out by participating individuals. It is an exchange of ideas among the individuals of a group on a specific topic. It is also known as leaderless discussion. It means its aim is to find out the natural leadership level of the candidates. The group discussion is well organised. At the first stage of the group discussion the topic "Are we sacrificing our culture for modernization" was given to the group. First the orange chudi sister starts the group discussion with the definition that modernisation is a state of progress and to adapt for the better. It's really nice. All of them give their point as much as they can and they are relavent to the topic. Also they give real life examples. Most of them let the other participants to raise their voice and they didn't interpret while other people were speaking except some people. Their eye conduct was good. Their body language was also good. Most of them are talk about the advantages of the modernisation. The group says that modernisation increases job opportunities. Yeah... It's really true. Because of the modernisation in the industries. In my opinion they might conclude it in some better way.

Group discussion is basically done to arrive at “out of the box” ideas or conclusions on any topic. It act as a medium or platform where one can put forth their ideas and thoughts in relation with the provided topic or motion. In the video given, a group of people brainstorm on the topic – influence of modernization on culture.
In the GD few of them argued that the changes that modernization brought about was positive in our country as it completely abolished certain traditional practices such as sati by spreading awareness of the evil of such a violent tradition. argued that modernization ruined India's identity as the people are trying to imitate Western culture instead of holding onto the rich diverse culture that our country has been built on. Fashion and women rights were brought to light which seemed like relevant topics. But the fact is that we are confusing with modernisation and western culture.
In the GD I noticed that two to three of the members were debating back and forth while the rest of the group took up a spectator seat. A moderator and initiator was clearly set between the members. The entire group maintained a good eye contact with each other and their body language was also good.they express ideas confidently. But only a few had lacked ideas.though these people don't talk often but listen to others speech which is very much important in a GD.This GD looks natural.
To me culture is the way we are doing things. this way occurs through our belief and emotions. In a diverse country a like India, culture is followed from thousands and thousands of years of ago.It is still not vanished. So, it will not vanish even after modernisation.

Group discussion refers to a communicate situation that allows its participants to share their views and opinions with other participants. It is a systematic exchange of information, views and opinion about a topic, problem, issue or situation among the members of a group who share some common objects. A GD also helps to achieve group goals as well as individuals goals.
Apart from that, the candidates are evaluated on the basis of their communication skills, knowledge, leadership skills, listening skills etc....
In this video,8-9 members take part in group discussion on the topic-"Influence of modernisation on culture".The starting went good and in the middle they moved a far from the topic...
1.They followed their professional dress code
2.They maintain decent English
3.They never look at the HR while the discussion is going on.
4.Some of them follows the eye contact among them...
5.They give chance to speak everyone who has become nervous and is not able to speak
6.They give real life examples
7. Maintain certain etiquette during the discussion.some of the etiquette I think should be maintained are: Never shout, never bang the table, never become aggressive, keep calm and give logical arguments in opposition.
When we found a solution to a problem by the group of people most probably the end solution will be in success.

ReplyDeleteGroup discussion is basically a open discussion involving a group of persons expressing their thought and ideas on the matter about what they are discussing to arrive at a solution.
Active participation is very essential in Group discussion.Secondly we have to listen keenly what other member in group is saying. Then while expressing our thoughts we should say it clearly and precisely.
Here in the above Group discussion video group of students were discussing about the topic,”Are we sacrificing our culture in the name of modernization. They really had a healthy and polite conversation. But everyone in the group didn’t participated actively in GD.
Overall the GD was well organised and thoughts and ideas discussed were very much relevant to the topic given to them .They argued politely even when the thoughts that they expressed were criticised. This is one of qualities one should have while participating in a GD.When they were holding up a deep conversation over a sub topic some facts and points expressed drifted them away from the main topic. But one in the group suddenly interrupted and pulled them back to the main stream again.I think he listened to everyone keenly.Because whenever you identify that the conversation starts drifting from the given topic you have to make it go in the right path since discussing irrevelant thoughts and ideas out of the topic is not appreciated in a GD.
Each of them spoke really well and they brought statistical fact into the conversation so the GD was very interesting. Few raised question which were the essential part of GD. No one led a biased argument in favour of others. They quoted many examples and substantiated their argument.Everyone got their turn and expressed their thoughts clearly and precisely. There wasn’t any time gap in their conversation.Everyone used their opportunities in the right manner. They arrived a apt conclusion at end of the GD.

Generally group discussion is to share our thoughts and listening to others thoughts. It helps to make decisions in a particular topic.
The topic have given to that group is Are we sacrificing our culture in name of modernisation.
They have started their discussion nicely and also concluded like that. The language of the speaker is good. Even their ideas and subtopics are good.they maintain good timing.
But in this discussion some of people dominating other. There is only four people speaks lot. Even they have more ideas to share, they should listen others and they should give chance to them.
Most of time, they are trying to speak, not trying to listen. even, there one of these guys trying to speak, they simply ignore him. other one, he is speaking very fast.
inspite of these negative, there timing is very nice. Starting at the discussion is went nice. when they often speaks at one subtopic, nicely they shifted there topic.
even, there are some inactive people. they speaks rarely. When they are trying to speak, other not let them.
but there is one lady speaks good. when all are against her, still she stands on her thoughts.
though there is some mistakes, their conversation went good. they concluded in proper way.

A group discussion is a forum for people to exchange various ideas on a particular issue. There is a lot of parameters under this label. A group discussion gives us an opportunity to express our views impromptu. It brings out our critical and analytical thinking capabilities. It also helps to think and analyze from myriad perspectives. It almost always culminates in a variety of solutions to a particular problem. It also plays a vital role in building a good rapport among the group members.
In the given video, the topic chosen is quite relevant to the current scenario. In a world that is racing ahead, we need to discuss and debate on good topics to discover the best feasible solutions. Summarizing the group discussion, we can say that it commenced well, the introduction was smooth and the discussion cruised along sensibly. At a particular point, the conversation veered to irrelevant headings, which is natural in any discussion. The participants were quite aware of the topics discussed, though a few didn’t open up well. Nevertheless the individual views were expressed, uninhibitedly. In the due course of the discussion, the presence of an inactive candidate became very obvious. What I found lacking was that the active participants were oblivious to this particular person and never bothered to draw him into the discussion. One appreciable thing is that the confidence level ranked high among many of the participants and the etiquette was definitely maintained throughout the discussion.
Coming to the conclusion part, it was unbiased, which is highly laudable. In aggregation, this group discussion appeared to be one that touched all the aspects of a proper GD.

ReplyDeleteNormally , group discussion refers to a communicative situation that allows its participants to share their views and opinions with other participants. It is a systematic exchange of information, views and opinions about a topic, problem, issue or situation among the members of a group.
Here the topic given for the Group Discussion(GD) is "Are we sacrificing the culture in the name of modernization".
The main aspect of the group discussions is to define a topic given to them and the way they defined the question is nice . Some people spoke clearly and concisely even when they felt uncertain about their ideas. They gave appropriate examples to support their views .At times the discussion went off track but some of the participants were attentive enough to trigger the discussions in the right track.some participants were more active when compared to others.Few interruptions were there but it didn't go rude at any point.
The body language expressed by participants were quite interesting and the way they spoke to other participants was polite. Almost every participants maintained eye contact throughout the session which is great.
The conclusion was contrary to the discussions made and I felt that they have not summed up their views.

A group discussion is basically a group of people expressing their opinion or sharing their ideas, their perspective on a given topic.By the means of discussion the group of people involved in the group discussion are able to analyze the particular topic given.
I feel the group discussion on the topic "Are we sacrificing our culture in the name of modernization" was done very well by the students. There was a proper introduction to the topic all though the person failed to define the topic which was given to them. The student had proper points and each person in the GD were able to listen to each others points so that they can speak against the point or raise a question regarding that particular point. The students had proper body language which was GD appropriate. All though when it comes to discussion I felt few of the students went of topic. There was one student who added a point saying that modernization had deprivated job opportunities. As india being 2nd largest country and everybody is educated and are looking for a job which was no way related us sacrificing our culture. There were questions raised based on the other student facts.which shows that the students are involved in the GD.
Overall the GD was well set although few people went off topic as the facts which are off topic are irrelevant in a GD .

Any debate or deliberation of a pertinent topic in a group, following a particular discussion etiquette is a group discussion.
While there are many things to reflect on positively in the discussion, let me start with the criticism. When the aspect of prostitution was brought forth as a point of argument, one of the panelists tried to shut it down citing the view that it is not something to speak about in a group discussion. I found it ironic that a panelist would try to shun a pretty prominent profession and implying it to be a taboo subject in the context of modernization.
Modernization is defined as "the process of adapting something to modern needs or habits". With this established, one of the panelists talks about the intertwining of culture and modernization. She says that the latter is very good if it deals with progress. But she says that culture intervenes with modernization. In my opinion, culture and progress can be complementary. I believe that with every passing moment, our cultures are evolving and adapting to keep pace with us.
One panelist outright rejects change and calls for a conservative approach to discuss the topic at hand. While she is not wrong to think or believe so, a certain level of acceptance and open-mindedness is key to making a group discussion productive.
"Modernization brought about the establishment of democracy." Technically, it was the Ancient Greeks who conceptualized democracy as a system of government. Basic "rule of the majority" types of governments have existed for a long time and the panelist is drifting away from the main agenda by bringing up this inaccurate statement.
The same panelist further says that religion is barely relevant to any form of modernization. However, I beg to differ. Religion has had a prominent role to play in the past, has an immense role to play in the present and will continue to play this role for many centuries to come. Wit the advent of modern events of religious extremism and such, it is confounding for her to say such a thing.
Change was fervently debated upon throughout the discussion. One panelist said that we change when we go settle in other countries. She declared this to be an "ugly truth". On the contrary, that is what modernization is, as defined very clearly above: adapting to different environments to suit modern needs. Change is inevitable. We either change for better or for worse. But it's unequivocally not always for the worse.
Conclusively, the discussion didn't always touch upon relevant topics of consideration. The main agenda was misinterpreted quite a few times. For example, one of the participants assumed that the agenda was about debating which was better: modernization or culture. However, the topic was clearly stated as sacrificing culture for modernization. The notion that both can go hand in hand was brushed upon very few times by very few participants.
The agenda was nicely set with the speaker giving a solid introduction and a clear definition of the topic. The conclusion wasn't as solid and lacked an appropriate connect to the fundamental idea of the main topic. Participation wasn't active always. There were very few unnatural pauses and the transitions were mostly smooth. The questions posed weren't always relevant and felt like a stop gap before the next subtopic could be mulled over.
Veering off subject was very common and redundant ideas irrelevant to the discussion were deliberated upon. A group discussion can have contrasting ideas but the aim is to accept and come to a compromise. Finding a compromise within the conflict was something the panelists found to be a Herculean task but it is the primary task.
The discussion felt vague at times and the arguments weren't always brought forward coherently. Overall, it was a good discussion which was far from ideal.

Basically, a group discussion is where a set of people discuss and share their knowledge and their views about the topic given, so that they most likely to arrive at the best solution for the topic within the given time..
For a GD to be perfect, the participants should have to analyse the topic critically from different kind of persectives and most importantly everyone should expose their ideas clearly and hence they could arrive at a conclusion as a group.
Now speaking about the given GD, at first the beauty of GD lies in the free and continuous flow of ideas from different sides, we can clearly see that the participants went with a great flow without much pauses(maybe there was one or two). The inititator started really well by giving some definitions about the topic which was the question about sacrifice of culture in the name of modernization. And the people followed her explained their perspectives clearly. At the start they seemed to be disagreeing with each other , but as the GD went on they came together as a group.
I feel like they discussed most of the subtopics well with illustrating necessary examples. There were both relevant and few irrelevant examples. Yeah, sometimes they went off topic which is very usual when it comes to GD. The thing is, how quick you are coming back or bringing other back to the topic and I would appreciate them for those quick comebacks. When we see about the body language , most of them had a great body language which looked professional. But at some points , few of them were very enthusiastic that they had no patience to wait for others to get the mic.
Some of them were inactive, they seemed enjoying the spectator role , on the other hand few people kinda dominated the discussion. In particular, one guy ( who was wearing a pink shirt) clearly put forward his crystal clear ideas at the right time in a polite way. Mostly everyone listened to others and the eye contact was really good. Overall, the discussion and the turns taken seemed very natural. The conclusion part is not really satisfying and it doesn’t look like the conclusion was extracted from the discussions they had. Although it had minor lags, It was really a fantastic GD and I should take the professionalism and their fearless way of putting forward their ideas , on positive notes.

Group discussion is a place where individuals with plethora of ideas analyse a particular subject from different perspectives in order to reach a consensus.
In the given example, the discussion starts off well with the girl giving a concrete introduction and a precise definition to what modernization is. To make things more natural, anecdotes and analogies to the past and present were offered from time to time. The most significant element of group discussion is to be attentive throughout the session and raise meaningful questions to provoke a progressive discussion and this was well executed. Consequently, diverse topics from healthcare, agriculture to education and clothing were covered.
At the same time, few topics did go off track. To site an example, discussion on automobile brands seemed quite irrelevant to the topic on “Modernization affecting culture.” But speakers were quick enough to realize this and ensured they were back on track again.
Although all had the chance to express their opinions, few remained aloof. A healthy discussion must involve the contribution of all participants and the fact that no one took notice and made any effort to provide him a chance is a sign of bad group dynamics.
The conclusion could’ve been a bit better and it would have been justifying had he summed up all the ideas. Overall, the decorum of GD was maintained throughout the session. Participants were bold enough to voice out their thoughts and maintained good body language and eye contact. They were keen listeners and things went with the flow.

Group discussion is the process whereby two or more people exchange information or ideas in a face-to-face situation to achieve a goal. Each member of the group takes part in the discussion actively and attempts to analyse the topic of discussion by bringing forward their thoughts on the matter.
The presented video on the topic "Influence of modernization on culture" is a controversial topic. They were around 8 to 10 people participating in the GD. Once the topic was given, they started their discussion in no time which was appreciable. A girl initiated the discussion very well by defining the topic" what modernisation is."
Followed by her ,most of them were actively participating in the discussion. Most of them were clear and concise on their view. Everyone communicated in an error free, formal manner. Even when they felt uncertain about other's ideas ,they didn't use any rude language or gesture rather they were polite enough to listen to what they were speaking and oppose them in a perfect manner.
Everyone maintained a classic and a professional body language. They all substantiated their views with perfect examples covering almost all the fields of development. Though they deviated from the topic once or twice, it is good that they realized that in a correct time and they were back on track again. They all maintained an eye contact with others in the group.
The discussion seemed to be natural as they were taking turns naturally. But twice the speaker's were interrupted while they were speajing. Most of them were keenly listening while others talking and raised enough questions wherever needed.
Though most of them actively participated in the discussion , there were 2 or 3 people who were sitting ideal. Others would have pulled them into the discussion by raising some 'yes or no questions' to them. When a girl was opposed by many in the group , she was strong enough to reply them in a polite manner and stood on her point firmly. Instead continuously targeting her , they would have changed their course of discussion. There weren't much pauses and it went on smoothly with natural turns. They would have discussed even more critically from many perspectives.
The conclusion wasn't up to the mark. The person who concluded would have done it in a better way..he would have summed up everyone's point and arrived at a conclusion.
As we all know "Change is the only constant" Modernisation is something which is inevitable for the development of our nation.Culture is the rules which we follow .Therefore culture is the moral values which can not be killed unless we allow it( to be killed in the name of modernisation)
Overall it was a fruitful GD which was engaging
The topic for the Group Discussion was Culture vs Modernisation and How Modernisation affects Culture.
ReplyDeleteAccording to me , the discussion was good. Though they missed out one some points, they managed to highlight the important ones. The speakers brought in ideas from different fields which made the discussion interesting. At one point I felt that they had deviated from the topic and began to talk about the negatives of Technology. They had mentioned how various "bad practices" were abolished to a large extent and that seemed a good point to me. The speakers had contradicted each other which kept the discussion lively. Some of them spoke very little but yet made their point clear and valid. The body language of the speakers were proper except for one speaker.
Though, there was one speaker, who I felt was quite feministic in her words. At times, she had brought out things which were completely irrelevant to the topic and that brought in some "dull" to the conversation. There was also a speaker, who spoke both for and against Modernisation, which I feel is the quality that a good speaker should have, the ability to accept each others' point of view.
I felt the conclusion was short , but it was good.Topics like these are never-ending, and group managed to give a satisfactory conclusion. They were able to cover a variety of topics , from Abolishment of sick practices to Agricultural Improvements. The speakers were quite fluent in thier language which is a definite add-on to the Group Discussion. They were completely able to understand what the other speaker was trying to convey and that, what I think is the most important in a Group Discussion.

Group discussion is one where a certain set of people combine to share their thoughts, ideas and perspectives on a chosen topic. When I say 'sharing thoughts', it not only involves the art of speaking but also includes the art of listening, analyzing and acquiring knowledge.
Although I don't support the views of everyone who spoke in the GD, I respect each one of their views.A life without modernization would still be in the stone age. Modernization provides efficient solutions to the existing problems. Modernization has its fair share of advantages and disadvantages. The major difference between modernization and westernization is not well understood by most of the people.
I was actually annoyed by Rebecca's points which were condescending and quite frankly irrelevant. The fact that she considers woman as a property of her spouse is misogynistic and truly shocking to know that she believes this, as a woman herself. People should wear whatever they feel comfortable and whichever they like. Safety of women doesn't come from the attire she wears instead from a society that doesn't objectify women.
I appreciate Santosh's point. He said sometimes culture could make us live in a box that society puts us in. I also believe that modernization is not about mocking or disregarding Indian traditions like festival, religion, heritage and history, etc. But it's people's choice whether they follow it or not. We should never forget about our roots and core moral values (kind to people and animals, being loyal to loved one and so on) , at the same time, be open-minded enough to modify or change certain ideas. The discussion could have been more topic-centric. Everyone articulated their thoughts well and it was interesting.
So group discussions are very important to throw out ideas ,look at different perspectives and to a central focal point about the topic. A GD helps to find the factors which affect the topic as well as the factors the topic itself influences.
ReplyDeleteSo for a good GD certain things have to be followed like body language and the group speaking as a whole. The GD had no awkward pauses but not everyone seemed to maintain eye contact.
Another thing which fell out of place was when a certain topic was talked about a person felt uncomfortable to talk about and urged everyone to move away from the topic. If you're uncomfortable with a topic you shouldn't have to talk about it but if the topic where to relevant to the discussion you shouldn't steer the conversation away from it.
Now coming to the topic itself , the group gave some very good points about modernization and its affect on tradition. While some of them where engaged into the topic not all where actively participating in the discussion.
Modernization does have its perks like introducing us to new things while eliminating some the basic as well. But this also makes vulnerable to many other stuff which may also influence in the wrong way.
So in all I felt the GD was good except for a few minor issues.

A group discussion is a medium where you can pitch in your ideas and thoughts and listen, argue, agree with other's ideas based on a topic so that you express your combined ideas as a group.A GD helps to analyze a particular topic's positive and negative side and it also brings out of the box ideas into light.
The given group discussion is about the influence of modernization on our cultures.Usually a discussion starts off with a good definition of the topic and I feel the girl gave a good intro to the topic by defining it precisely. So she was the initiator of the discussion. The conversation didn't feel scripted at all and there was also no awkward silences.People were always trying to fill in those silences by pitching in new ideas and asking others opinions on it.That is needed in a GD.Also the group was organized with their ideas and even though the topic went off track they came back to the original topic.A person kept introducing new sub topics and asked other's ideas ,so he was the moderator of the discussion. The body language of the participants was also good and they were maintaining eye contact through out the discussion. The participants listened keenly to everybody's views and they did not try to interupt at any stage. They argued over other's points just to prove them wrong in a humble manner and it did not come out as rude.
A few were really good in expressing their ideas and gave apt examples relevent to their points.I guess their names were Santhosh and Laxman.Santhosh did not stumble at any point and he had some very good points to express.Rebecca, even though she was deviating from the topic at a few stages and was mocked at,did not change her ideas to make the GD look interesting or whatever. She stood by her points till the end.A few people remained silent till the end.
I personally felt that the moderator could have brought in the people who didn't speak till the end and could have asked them their views on the topic. The conclusion was also satisfactory and it did not conclude their discussion properly. On the whole I feel that it is a good discussion despite the negative side.

Group discussion is done general in order to share our opinions with others and conclude whether our views about a particular topic were right or wrong and it is the place where we find a solution for a issue while working as a team.

ReplyDeleteIn the group discussion, there is a group of individuals who discuss about a topic to solve problems or make comments. “Are we sacrificing our culture in name of modernization” is the topic in given sample GD.
The main moto of GD is to get everyone’s point of view in the topic and arrive at a solution, but in this some them are quite till the end of the GD. On the other hand those who discussed done it very well, they questioned each other to make some ideas clear, put forth their individual point of views without hesitation. At some places they went out of the topic but not for long. The participants at some points are in an urge to put forward their points, they must have wait for the other participant to complete his/her point. They could have made their conclusions even better.
Apart from all these it is more like a professional GD, and a Good Example for how a Group Discussion should be.
